You have 16 friends tht you want to invite to dinner. However, your dining room table only seats 6 people. Since you will take up one seat, you can only have five friends at one time. How many different groups of guests can you have?

What is N?

What is r?

What is the calculated value for this example?

Can you just help me find N and r and explain how you got those? I can take it from there.

  1. You are finding number of combinations to pick 5 from 16.

    So N would be 16, r is 5, and number of combinations is 4368.

  2. N=16

    r=5

    16C5

    16 ! / 5! 11!

    4,368
