1. You want to buy a board and you've never been? Okay.

But how do you know you like it? How do you know you want a shortboard? What about a longboard, a fish, a funboard? How much money do you want to spend? What do you want it to look like? How do you want to surf?

If you've never gone before, rent a longboard. 8'0 minimum. You can get a 9 or 10 foot board, but it would be over kill for someone your size. Try out the smaller 8' board and see how you like it. I would recommend not jumping right on a 5'11 board because in addition to being a lot shorter, they are a lot thinner and narrower. You won't be able to catch waves very easily and when you stand up it's very unstable. If you've surfed before and are determined to shortboard, get a 7'0 board that isn't a funboard, but one that is shaped like a shortboard. It will be more stable but shorter so you can turn it like a shortboard. When you get better you can sell it and keep progressing down.

Surfing isn't something that you can pick up in a couple weeks, especially when you are talking about shortboarding. You don't need to learn on a longboard, but you can't just jump on a high performance shortboard and learn in a couple weeks.

But good luck. I'm 5'3, went out on a friend's 9' longboard once, got my own 6'8 shortboard, then moved down to a 6'2 board, and so on from there. I was sure I wanted to shortboard so I never really started on a longboard. But I didn't start with my current 6'0 board either..... Just make sure you have fun and don't get frustrated too fast.

  2. if you are new to surfing buy a longboard (9 or 10 foot)

you can aslo learn with a smaller board, like 7"9, or 7"6.

But don't try to learn to surf with a shortboard it's too hard for beginners.

just remenber, the longer the better
