1. The teachers get together with the Principal and talk about it.

If they had trouble last year with 2 boys who hated each other, then they'd put them in separate classes this year.

You can bet that any 2 kids who were in the same classes last year and got into trouble will be separated this new year as much as possible.

Also, if a child is 'high maintenance' and the principal has another 'high maintenance' child, both will be put into separate classes to spare the teacher from getting all of the 'troublemakers'.

  2. Not sure.

I think that they just choose randomly.

  3. Its all computerized and based on the master schedule design. It is also based on other factors such as test scores, last years grades and teacher recommendations.

  4. At my school they start with all the advanced math students and divide them up so that they are in the homeroom of a teacher that teaches math. After that, they place all the special ed students who need to have their classes at certain times of the day. After that they randomly place every one else. Finally they go through and check to make sure no class has too many troublesome students in it or too many slacker kids and so on. The last part is done by hand in the computer to try to balance the classes out.

  5. In really small districts everyone is in the same class because there is only one class per grade.

In larger districts there are several different ways:

Tracking or Ability Grouping: Students are grouped by academic ability. In other words the smart kids will be in gifted classes. The normal kids will be in college bound classes. The low acheivers will be in a vocational program. Then there are classes for the mentally challenged, etc.

Random by computer: The names and needed classes are put into a computer and the computer just drops everyone in at random. These schools will probably still have gifted programs and special education classes, but everyone else just goes by the luck of the draw.

Interest: Usually used in vocational type schools. Students are placed in classes by what they want to do when they finish school. Usually these schools have a work study program for at least junior and senior year.

Student Choice or college style: Students chose their schedules unless a class they want is full.

  6. it really depends on the school but most schools these days let the computer do it they usually don't put friends together that is too much work but u can always try to get in the same elective!!

  7. When I tried to request a specific teacher for my son they told me that I could only ask for characteristics that the teacher had.

After asking, they said that it was done by computer and was random.
