1. Scream and hide in your basement (if you have 1) or in the bath with a matress over it.

  2. Good answers for immediate dangers from tornados.

If you are thinking way ahead, like a year ahead, you might want to consider adding a new building/house frame reinforcing system, called Structural Strap-Nets. They don't cost too much, can be added permanent (retro-fitted) or temporary (the exterior product lines), and really improve the building/structure's abilities to stay up in a tornado.

You still have to evacuate if there is time, and get to the currently listed/stated safe-spots, but your house/building will survive the tornado (with exterior wall & roof damages), and your stuff in the house will be there after the tornado, which is pretty cool.

  3. I've only been in one immediate emergency and we were outside. We ran to an outdoor locker room. There were so many of us (it was a marching band competition...) and most of us didn't even know why everyone was running! I looked behind us and saw the little "off shoot" funnels connected to the main one. It was only then that I said to myself "oh! tornado!!!!!" It came and went within seconds, it seemed. The sun came out but down the horizon was a huge wedge.

We returned to the marching band competition within an hour (obviously there wasn't much damage to our area). There was a HUGE problem, though: the storm had blown a bee's nest onto the field. The colorguard were stung badly by bees.

  4. do the following when a tornaode comes your way...

    Prepare a Home Tornado Plan

Pick a place where family members could gather if a tornado is headed your way. It could be your basement or, if there is no basement, a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest floor. Keep this place uncluttered.

If you are in a high-rise building, you may not have enough time to go to the lowest floor. Pick a place in a hallway in the center of the building.

When a Tornado WARNING Is Issued...

If you are inside, go to the safe place you picked to protect yourself from glass and other flying objects. The tornado may be approaching your area.

If you are outside, hurry to the basement of a nearby sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area.

If you are in a car or mobile home, get out immediately and head for safety (as above).

    have the following...

First aid kit and essential medications.

    Canned food and can opener.

At least three gallons of water per person.

Protective clothing, bedding, or sleeping bags.

Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.

Special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members.

Written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water if authorities advise you to do so. (Remember, you'll need a professional to turn natural gas service back on.)

    After the Tornado Passes...

Watch out for fallen power lines and stay out of the damaged area.

Listen to the radio for information and instructions.

Use a flashlight to inspect your home for damage.

Do not use candles at any time.

    Stay Tuned for Storm Warnings

Listen to your local radio and TV stations for updated storm information.

Know what a tornado WATCH and WARNING means:

A tornado WATCH means a tornado is possible in your area.

A tornado WARNING means a tornado has been sighted and may be headed for your area. Go to safety immediately.

Tornado WATCHES and WARNINGS are issued by county or parish.

When a Tornado WATCH Is Issued...

Listen to local radio and TV stations for further updates.

Be alert to changing weather conditions. Blowing debris or the sound of an approaching tornado may alert you. Many people say it sounds like a freight train.

  5. Go as far down and as far in as you can go

preferrably the basement and a bathroom w/ no windows.

  6. If you have a basement, get into. If not, get into the most interior room. Get under something heavy like a matress. Get into an interior bathroom, hide under the sink or in the bathtub. Make sure the back of your neck is protected, and most importantly stay away from windows. Listen to a weather radio, they give you immediate updates on the storm.

Beware of myths. Do not open your windows, this wastes time, and may actually more severly damage your house as strong winds could lift your roof clean off.

If you are driving NEVER get under an overpass, true we have seen that video from the 90's of the film crew in Kansas. That was a weak tornado, and did not sustain a direct hit on the bridge. Many people were killed doing that very thing in both the 1999 Oklahoma City tornado, and the Wichita Falls tornado in 1979.

  7. This is the time right now to plan what to do for a tornado and make sure you have a NOAA weather alert radio The radios can alert you when a tornado warning is issued at night while sleeping.

A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop and you should pay close attention to the weather. A watch it typically issued with in 2-3 hours of the event.

When a tornado warning is issued that means doppler radar has detected rotation in a storm or trained spotters have spotted a rotating wall cloud, funnel cloud, or a tornado on the ground.

If a tornado warning is issued for your area, do not panic. Go to a place of safety. Go to the lowest floor of your house like the basement. Once in the basement get under a sturdy piece of furniture or go into a bathroom in the basement. If no basement is available go in to an interior room such as a closet. If that is not available go in to an bathroom without windows. Stay away from outside walls and windows. Cover your head to protect from flying debris. Never try to out run a tornado in a car, if cought in a car and can not take no place of safety, lay down in a ditch and cover your head. Do not take cover under a over pass. Do not stay in mobile homes as they do not offer protection and can be flown as easily as cars can.

  8. Well, you get in your basement. If you don't have a basement, then go in a bathroom. Get away from windows!

  9. I've done a few things... hiding in the basement with a radio is probably the best choice...

However, I was camping at a lake once when the sirens went off, so we ran to the nearby brick restrooms to seek shelter. Everyone ended up standing outside of the bathrooms with their cameras! It wasn't a huge tornado, but it's still kind of breath-taking to see.
