1) 21 steps to signify the 21 gun salute

2) 21 steps for the above reason

3)  The gloves are moistened to prevent him losing his grip on the rifle

4) He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb

5)  The guard is changed every thirty minutes in the summer and every hour in the winter.  Every two hours when the cemetary is closed
