1. b/c emo kids made it a trend

  2. I'd like to know the answer to this as well...

    :(

  3. Because, even if they are doing it unconsciously for attention, they are. They have learned, by association, if they hurt themselves, they will get attention. So, even if they do not think this through consciously, they are still doing it for attention.

It's kind of like a superstition - you associate, let's say, kicking your computer with it coming out of a crash. So, next time it crashes, you will kick it. However, when you kick it, you won't be thinking "Aha, this'll do the trick", instead, you'll simply have an urge to do it. With someone who hurts themselves they'll have an "urge" like this. They won't directly be thinking "This'll get some attention."

  4. One encyclopedia on youths observes: “Adolescents who self-injure often feel powerless, have difficulty trusting others with emotions, feel isolated or alienated, feel afraid, and have low self-esteem.”

Some may say that this description could fit almost any young person who is facing the fears and insecurities of growing up. For the self-injurer, though, the struggle is particularly intense. The inability to put troubled feelings into words and to express these to a confidant can make pressures from school, demands of work, or conflicts at home appear overwhelming. She sees no solution and feels she has no one to talk to. The tension feels unbearable. Finally, she discovers something: By hurting herself physically, she seems to find some relief from the emotional anguish, and she feels she can carry on with her life—at least for the moment.

To illustrate, consider what happens when you are in a doctor’s office about to get a shot. As the process begins, have you ever found yourself pinching your skin or perhaps putting pressure on it with your fingernail, just to distract yourself from the sting of the needle? What the self-injurer does is similar, although on a more serious level. To the self-injurer, cutting provides a form of distraction and a sense of relief from the sting of emotional anguish. And the anguish is so great that by comparison physical pain is preferable. Perhaps that is why one self-injurer described cutting as “medicine for my fears.”

To those who are not acquainted with the disorder, self-injury may appear to be an attempt at suicide. But this is not usually the case. “Generally speaking, these people are trying to end just their pain, not their lives,” writes Sabrina Solin Weill, executive editor of a magazine for teens. Hence, one reference work refers to self-injury as “a ‘life preserver’ rather than an exit strategy.” It also calls the practice “a mechanism to cope with stress.” What kind of stress?

I found this in A magazine if you would like to read the whole thing e-mail me.

I understand because I been there, done that.

  5. Honey cutting is a thing people want to give pat answers to because they don't want to think about deeper facts.

    Cutting has many explanations.

It is a way to relieve emotional pain.

A way to gain instant power over powerless feelings

A distraction from thoughts too horrible to bare

    and from suicidal actions.

However you do need attention if you are a cutter because your needs aren't being met in a healthy way. A cutter needs to seek professional help and if its you, I hope you will do that. You are worth while and entitled to a happier way of life. God bless you

  6. well why else would you want to

    die and cut yourself ?

if you hate your life soo much then

    jump off a bridge.

    at some points life is

depressing but you should give it a chance

  7. I am sorry to hear about your cutting problem.

If I were in your position, I wouldn't be very concerned about what people are thinking about you. Maybe they are making assumptions about you that aren't true. This happens all the time, whether the issue is cutting, the color of your skin, the way you dress, what religion you belong to, etc., etc. We can't control the assumptions that people make about us.

What concerns me more is why you decided to cut yourself. Maybe you felt very sad or helpless. Maybe you were angry at what was happening in your life, or you were angry at yourself. Maybe it was a way to get your friends or family to see that you were in pain. Sometimes we are angry at someone (like an old boyfriend or a parent) but we can't express it to them. So we wind up hurting or cutting ourselves instead of them.

As someone else suggested here, this is probably a good time to see some type of therapist or counselor. Therapy has helped me a lot with clinical depression. Sometimes, we keep negative feelings bottled up inside, so just talking about it can be very healing. In many parts of the country, there are self-help groups or support groups where you can meet others who have similar problems.

  8. Because people are ignorant Im afraid, especially when it comes to mental health issues. As you probably know although, yes sometimes self harm is a cry for help it is a mostly a way of coping and a distraction from the intense emotional pain a person is feeling.

Sadly there are people who think being sad and cutting is cool and have a romantic image of it, I used to have a housemate like that. She loved to project an imagine of being a "tortued, creative soul". I suffer from depression and know there is nothing great about it, and it kind of makes a mockery of issues that are serious and genuine sufferers would give anything not to have to live with.

Dont worry though, people with any sense understand what cutting is really about, or if they dont are open to being educated.

  9. Usually they are just looking for attention, but there's a mental illness that comes along with cutting wherein one is "bleeding out the bad blood" of depression or neglect or any such terrible thing that ruins one's brain.

  10. Why do people assume an emo is looking for attention? Why even include emo in this? BTW emo started as a punk alternative 20 years ago. Cutting or emo, there's nothing new here.

If you are cutting, your best to go see a therapist who can help you, because it only gets worse --- from wrists to belly to legs, etc...

This is a form of self-hate. Do you want to live the rest of your life hating yourself? A therapist can help you be happy and healthy.
