1. Because glass retains heat easily.

So if it is holding alot of heat it will have expanded a bit, so if you suddenly dunk it in very cold water, the "shock" of temperature change will cause it to contract at the same time as its expanding and it will crack. It happens more easily with wine glasses because they are made of such thin panels of glass.

By the by, you might want to put this in the right section next time, you'll get more answers that way.

  2. When you put cold water in the glass, it contracts (Thermal Expansion Coefficients) and then the hot water makes it expand too quickly, thus breaking

  3. Heat makes materials expand and cold makes them contract. So when you put a hot liquid in a cold glass, or a cold liquid in a hot glass, it will crack from the expansion and contraction, since it doesn't know which way to go. That's about as unscientific an explanation as I can give you. Have you ever had a jar lid that wouldn't budge? Run it under the hot water faucet for a minute or so, and it will come off with very little effort, due to the expansion of the metal lid.

  4. The same reason that any breakable object might--the shock. Items contract when they are cold and expand when they are hot, so putting hot water in a cold glass can cause it to break. The same thing might happen if you put ice water into a hot glass.
