  1. For older horses with arthritis, there are many ways to treat it, but make sure you talk to your vet before taking any actions:

    1. There are senior feeds with more nutrition then other feeds, but it may not help very much with the arthritis.

    2. There are many, many diffrent types of supplements to put in your horses normal feed to help with arthritis and achy joints.

    3. There are also many liniment to put on your horses sore spots, to just rub into their fur.

Most of these things you should be able to find at your local tack shop, or you can find them in horse catalogs and internet sights, and your vet can even prescribe various things for your horse. You can also help your horse by putting wraps or support boots on when you ride and warming your horse up properly, especially in cold weather. If your horses legs get swollen up, you can cold hose his/her legs, if your vet thinks its ok.

    Good Luck!

  2. Well, I guess talk to a vet first, where is the arthritis in your horse?

For our older TB gelding who had starting arthritis in his left front foot, we used a combination of special corrective shoeing with a pad and eggbutt shoes and put him on supplements. He was on the Recovery EQ and it worked wonders! But you might want to talk to your vet before doing anything.

    Good luck!

  3. Definitely consult your vet but I've used many of the joints supplements. They really help.  Check for the amount in each product.  They do vary.  I buy the product with the most glucosamine & chondroitin for the best price and feed 2x a day.

  4. We had an older arthritic horse. He was really picky about what went in his food so, we had to find something really palatable, and since he was an old lesson horse, we weren't looking to spend a ton of money on supplements for him. We found this one, called Next Level. It's like $30-40 for a month's supply and it's alfafa based so its yummy. It worked really well for him. Contains MSM, glucosamine, shark cartilage, ester-c and some other stuff. I really recommend it.

And if you're willing to spend the $$ for Cosequin, it definitely works! You also might consider a monthly injection of Adequan or Legend. The Adequan is actually the only thing I do for my 14 yr old jumper mare, and she has no issues.

  5. for mild arthritis i usually add a cupful of cider vinegar to the feed which is about £10.00 for 5 litres.   i saw an improvement with an old mare that was given to us.   later i decided to try 'nobute'  which contains  devils claw,  this worked better as i could see a big improvement.  she could now actually lay down and get up on her own.  this costs about £18.00 for 1 litre but is cost effective in that only about 30ml is given daily.

jo-jo ( the pony ) thanked us for helping her by being the easiest pony to handle.   good luck.

  6. Talk to your vet
