violence and bipolar disorder

Yes, my son, who has bipolar disorder, has gone into rages--punched the inside of the car windshield, punched holes in walls, slammed and broke doors--and does not remember most of the incidents.  When in these rages, he also screams horrible things...and then later wonders why I am so upset!  There seems to be a point in the rage process that if the line is crossed, things can be said and done with no memory of it.  Very scary.
