  1. The best way (and cheapest) is to travel via Cathy Pacific to Hong Kong and then via Vietnam Airline to Saigon. Another inexpensive route is Korean Airlines to Korea and then a direct flight to Saigon

Your best deal in a hotel room is going to be the Rex hotel. It includes breakfast and is very well located.

  2. You can book your flight reservation with Masai Travel. They have the cheapest fare to Vietnam from US.

  3. the best hotels are very expensive $200 a night and up, the rex , caravel, new world, majestic. if your looking for a good cheap place, there are dozens of mini hotels in the "back pack " tourest area [district 1] bordered by pham ngu lau, de tham, and bui vien streets. you can get a single room for $7 clean, hot water bathroom, tv and ac[ mabey 1-2 dollars more for ac]. my favorite is the "dong phuong"[oriental] on de tham steet just off the corner of phan ngu lau street. it costs a few dollars more but it is quite safe, very clean, includes breakfast and keeps its doors open all noght [ most places lock up after 1 -2 am and you have to bang on the gate to get in.]  as for flights , in country flights could not be cheaper. and they are useually puntctual. international flights are the going rate.

  4. For a private residence in Saigon, you may contact this person email for his nice much cheaper place to stay with all utilities, internet, AC, food, laundries, telephone, cable TV, security... transportation arrangement. French and English speaking.

I stayed at his residence.. trust worthy!

  5. There are discount airlines serving Vietnam but none fly directly to the US, Japan or Europe.  However, flying with in SE Asia is Tiger Air out of Singapore into Saigon and Air Asia out of Kuala Lumpur to Hanoi (maybe by now also Ho Chi Minh City). Also once in a while there are  special deals to Bangkok via some of the big state owned international guys that have ties with the Vietnamese goverment.

Though the other other post is correct in that it seems the Vietnamese government trys to control the pricing of air travel. Probably in an attempt to maximize the profitability of the state owned Vietnam Airlines. However, thing seem to be changing quickly in Vietnam.    Doug   http://vietnam-now.com

  6. There are no budget domestic flights because Vietnam Airlines has a monopoly on air travel in the country. Rates are fixed and always the same.

As for international, it depends on what you mean by "budget". Some carriers (like Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines -- which tend to be over $1,000) are more expensive than others (such as China Airlines, Japan Airlines, and Asiana -- which tend to be a bit less than $1,000), but the difference will not be that much.

There's nothing like a Southwest, JetBlue, or Ryanair in Asia, so really cheap flights are out of the question.

Hotel rates in Vietnam are rising as well. And due to the recent construction boom, the American luxury chains (Hyatt, Renaissance, etc.) have arrived. Obviously, if you stay at one of them, you can expect similar service and amenities to the U.S., for the same price as in the U.S.

Your best bet for a cheap room is still one of the many locally owned mini-hotels in District 3 or District 5.

But insist on seeing the room first... before handing over the money! Quality and cleanliness varies considerably. Ideally, shop around until you find something that suits you.
