    ANIMALS

Of the earth's estimated 10 million species, 300,000 have vanished in the past 50 years. each years, 3,000 to 30,000 species become extinct.

Human activity is speeding that up since we tend to overpower all the other species in one way or another.

Some reasons why animals are being wiped out ,in the forests are:

The hunting of exotic species for pets or body parts for medicines.

Only about 10% of the animals caught survive

the hunting of animals for food by settlers of expanding populations

Forest fires ,that have started because of slash and burning of forest ,to clear the land for farming, had gotten out of control

The loss of Habitat because the conditions have changed ,e.g less humidity because of deforestation ,Forests being replaced with much dryer farmlands ,or concrete and tar to accomodate expanding humanity.

Or the over pumping of rivers for human use(farming and utility)and carbon Aquifers

Because of contamination of the waters ,

Expanding populations and expanding farming ,(that has to keep pace with the expanding populations) are very strong forces that cannot be slowed down,

clearing the rainforest's  for farming and settlement areas .

In Mexico is a famous jungle that the Media has been trying to save for years

The Naturalists ,and the government ,keep watch .laws are made for the protection of wild life and to forbid logging.

TV put out a series of documentaries

there are campaigns in the News papers

And all of this has not made the SLIGHTEST difference.

In My town trucks loaded with exotic timber ,leave the mountains almost everyday ,with bought licenses bought from corrupt officials

    by passing army check points.

Rainforest's/forests always are in third world countries and always in third world countries corruption and the need for money s highest.

The jungles gets smaller by the day

more and more farmers move in .and burn the trees

    it is an impossible situation

as long as there is poverty in these regions the destruction will continue

and the Animals will continue to be trapped ,as long as people keep buying the exotic animals

    CLIMATE CHANGE

And now many animals are becoming sick because of changes in temperature ,and changes at microscopic levels that affect everything that follows in the food chains

vital links  are disappearing affecting other species further along in the chain

90% of the feral (wild) bee population in the United States has died out.

Recent studies in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands have shown that bee diversity is down 80 percent in the sites researched, and that "bee species are declining or have become extinct in Britain." The studies also revealed that the numbers of wildflowers that depend on pollination have dropped by 70 percent.

If bees continue to die off so would the crops they support and with that would ensue major economic disruption and possibly famine.

Bees are not the only pollinators but if these things are happening to bees we can bet on it that other insects are also in trouble ,on top of this many people are spraying for mosquitoes ,with drastic effects .

so much follows the insects in the food chains ,that we can expect a lot of very bad changes in the environment .

only time will tell what is in store for us ,and that time is running now .

everything is happening so fast it is not possible to monitor events any more

so to name specific species is a big job that changes by the day.

basically all of Nature is on the frontline ,there are extinctions in the sea as well as on the land

The biggest changes as yet are the ones too small to  see

  11. dont know anyone of them but i do know which are extinct:

    the baiji/chinese river dolphin

    the dodo

    the moa

    Thylacine Thylacinus cynocephalus

Tasmanian Wolf or Thylacine, Thylacinus cynocephalus

The Tasmanian Wolf is not a wolf, but a carnivorous marsupial and a relative of wombats and kangaroos.  It even has a pouch.   Tasmanian officials promoting ranching paid bounties to hunters.  Believed to be extinct for well over half a century, unconfirmed reported sightings persist.

    English Wolf

    English Wolf

The wolf became extinct in England in 1486, Scotland in 1743, and Ireland in 1770.

    Quagga

    Quagga

Quagga, Equus burchelli quagga, of the Karoo Plains and southern Free State of South Africa were a subspecies of the Burchell’s Zebra, although their unique appearance wouldn't necessarily make this apparent.  Some thought incorrectly that the Quagga was the female of Burchell's Zebra, probably because the natives gave both zebras the same name.

In the wild, Quaggas, Ostriches and Wildebeests often grazed together in what was termed the "triple alliance".  The Quagga's hearing, the Ostrich's eyesight and the Wildibeast's keen sense of smell comprised excellent defense from predators for the entire herd.  However, its limited range made it all the more vulnerable and Quaggas were hunted to the brink of extinction in the mid 19th Century by settlers razing sheep, goats and other livestock. The last Quagga died in in 1883 in an Amsterdam Zoo.

Turanian Tiger, Caspian Tiger, Wilhelm Kuhnert, Scientific American, 1897

    Turanian Tiger, Caspian Tiger

Caspian Tigers lived in China, Tajikistan, Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey.  They were hunted for their furs and to protect livestock.  A ban on hunting the Caspian Tiger in the USSR in 1947 followed their greatest destruction in the 1930s.  The last Caspian Tiger reported shot was in 1957.

    Steller's Sea Cow

    Steller's Sea Cow

Steller's Sea Cow was discovered in the Aleutian Islands by George Steller while exploring with Vitus Bering in 1741. They grew as large as 35 feet long and weighed up to three-and-a-half tons.    Sailors ate their meat and used their leather.  They were easily killed and vanished from their only home within 30 years after Steller's discovery.

    Steller's Sea Cow

    Pallus Cormorant

    Spectacled Cormorant, Pallas' Cormorant

Also discovered in the Aleutian Islands by George Steller while exploring with Vitus Bering in 1741.  The Spectacled Cormorant was extinct within about a century.

Dodo, Extinct Monsters, H.N. Hutchinson, 1917

    Dodo

In 1505, Portuguese explorers discovered the island of Mauritius and the 50 lb flightless Dodos which supplemented their food stores.  Imported pigs, monkeys and rats fed on the Dodo's eggs in their ground nests.  The last Dodo was killed in 1681

  23. Perma culture where are you getting your statistics? if 3,000-30,000 species are dissappearing every year and 300,000 have already become extinct (are they including the dinosaurs?) then all species would have been wiped out by now.

I think they exaggerated these claims to scare people.  scare tactics work that is why the governments, religion and big business use it. If you get people freaked out about something then common sense and logical thinking go right out the door.

    endangered species?

white americans?  English language in america? songbirds.  common sense. Logic.  woodlands, well around here anyway. skunks, ground hogs and raccoons I see them on the side of the road in great numbers they have to be going extinct, you think?

polar bears. oh wait they estimated their numbers around 26-28 thousand.  no maybe not endangered compared to several decades ago when they numbered less than 10,000 due to hunting and other factors.

coopers hawk? they are supposed to be pretty abundant around here I seldom see one, occassionally I see one, but generally I don't even tho I look for birds everyday I am outside.

pileated woodpeckers, I only see them once or twice in several years around here.

    can't think of any more.
