The race concept is not particularly useful from the biological or sociological point of view, since all the races belong to an only biological species, Homo sapiens, and they only show small genetic variations. The culture much more constitutes an important factor at the time of determining the conduct and style of life of the different human groups. The term race is controversial by the slight knowledge of superiority and inferiority that takes implicit. The race constituted the justification to implant the state of slavery, the social persecution of minorities and other groups, like the one of the Jewish town during n**i Germany, or the system of apartheid in South Africa.

  1. Race?  Sure a lot of anti-racial people say its not true.  But Man A from Europe has blonde hair and blue eyes, is a human but looks completely different from Man B in Africa and has a totally different unique history from his own people spaning thousands of years at least.

  2. I am not sure what the question is here but slavery has existed as long as humans have. Some civilizations enslaved their own population right now. It isn't a US only problem we just talk more openly about it here. Mayans, Egyptians, Greeks, etc.  they all had slaves of some sort or another. Europeans bought slaves from African Kings who sold their own citizens to avoid rivalries over territories.

There have been more people enslaved for other reasons besides race, than because of it. Racism usually sparks genocide and not slavery.

As for racial classification, using the term race in it's current definition is fairly recent, in it's original meaning it was used as a term to differentiate between groups by region, example the Caucasian Race was called that not because the are white(they may not have been, no way to know) but because they dwell ed in the region of the Caucasus Mountains.

  3. Ivy:  Most slaves were sold to Europeans by other Africans.  They were captured in battle or as spoils of war and sold.  This occurred from a long time before (Arab slave traders pre date the Europeans by a long time) but European chattel slavery and plantation systems caused a great demand and the introduction of guns gave th opportunity to intensify the trade.

Race is an issue in the United States.  In the south there are large numbers of both Blacks and Latins the institutionalized inequality may only recently have been done away with but de jur (in law) equlity does not equal de facto (in fact) equality.  De segregation and the Equal Rights Amendments may change the laws but people's attitudes are a bit harder.  The increases in number of Latin people has made them a target of discrimination as well.

The main reason for racial tension anywhere (US, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, just to name the ones I know most about) is that minority populations are often insular (keep to themselves) they do not acclimate to the majority population (act, dress, talk, eat like them) and this causes the majority population to regard them as strange and different and perhaps as secretive and dangerous.  It is an unfortunate human tendency to regard that which we do not understand as suspicious.

  4. I'm not sure what you're asking, but race has been an issue in the US since the English settled here and brought slaves over to do their work for them.  A funny thing I heard, not sure where or even if it was true, but definitely amusing; the slaves were sold by THEIR OWN PEOPLE!!!
