The Brits have sovereignity over the Falklands, because the population there want to be British not Argentine. If they had wanted to be Argentine there would have been no war.

The Falkland Islands consist of two large and many small islands in the South Atlantic Ocean east of Argentina, and their name and ownership have long been disputed. The war was triggered by the occupation of South Georgia by Argentina on 19 March 1982 followed by the occupation of the Falklands, and ended when Argentina surrendered on 14 June 1982. The initial invasion was considered by Argentina as the re-occupation of its own territory, and by Britain as an invasion of a British overseas territory, and the most recent invasion of British territory by a foreign power.

Nearly every day some Argie person asks this question, trying to stir up controversy. It comes up in the Argentinian news when there's bad news for the natives - it helps keep morale up!

Why don't you go to the Falkland Islands, and ask the people who live there if they are British or Argentinian?

The Falkland Islands are British. The people who live there are mostly of British stock and the majority wish to remain British. Self-detrmination suggests it should stay that way until, they no longer want this. Argentine has never owned the Falklands. Their claim to sovereignty is spurious and based on Argentina inheriting what may once have been Spanish.
