Check the grabaseat Air New Zealand flights. http://www.airnz.co.nz/    You might be lucky and get a really cheap flight. Other wise a bus pass may be the best option.

Interisland ferry currently has specials - see below.

Check the bus company below- hope nobody tries to censor it or censure me for this, it really is the company's legitimate name and it is named for the fact that it is travel plain and simple.  (I did suggest to them some time ago it would be a problem for some web surfers but they basically said it had become established and therefore they could/would not change it.)  But don't take the name literally if you travel with them lol.

if you are traveling solo it would be cheaper to fly than ferry and bus or train and much quicker! of course the scenic option would be to ferry though
