Question:

♫ Character name suggestions?

I'm writing a book and I'd like some suggestions for a female character name. I've been considering Lorelei or Pippa (full name Persephone) for her (it's a fantasy book, fyi), but I haven't quite reached a decision yet. Here's a description:

She's around 15/16 years old with elbow-length, white-blonde hair and huge crystal-blue eyes. She can be slightly naive and a little to quick to trust (exactly the opposite of the main character) and has an uncontrollable need to see the good in everyone. She knows herself very well (almost too well) and has a very 'go wherever the wind takes her' personality. She loves to daydream and is almost annoyingly optimistic, even when the circumstances are less than promising.

So, any ideas?

I'd like something a bit mysterious and unique, as the other main characters' names are all fairly well-known.

Thanks for your help!

  6. Well it sounds like you've got a pretty good book going! I write some stories too, and when I do, I usually make up the names, or sometimes I use Japanese names. (Japanese names are cool!) Just think of a starting letter and the rest will come to you. Here are some suggestions:

    Rinneka (Rin-Eh-Kuh)

    Erinne (Eh-Rin-Ay)

(BTW, I like Lorelei! I think it fits her perfectly, these are just suggestions for some other characters if you need any =D)

    ^-^ ~Hope I helped~ ^-^

  7. I like Persephone for her, but don't shorten it.  You could also use Aphrodite, as she looks like her.  Lucy is a name I associate with the personality you're giving her.  Serin is also a name I like.  You should go through a book of gods and goddesses of Greek, Roman and other mythology and pick a name from there.

  8. Hope?

I think it fits her personality pretty well :-)

Also I'm thinking Felicity, perhaps Fliss for short?

  9. I like Pippa.  ^^  It's cute and sweet.

Other Suggestions: Myrna, Alyra, Annabelle, Gwen, Cynthia, Jerika (pronounced, jair-ih-kuh)

  17. Okay, folks, we have another fantasy writer! Welcome to the club! Let me give you a few tips when writing fantasy novels. Nearly all fantasy novels are based off of some culture, usually a culture that's long gone. Harry Potter was based off of Middle Ages English culture, same with Lord of the Rings, though LOTR was more closely based on that time period. The Illiad was based on Ancient Greek culture. So whatever you're writing, make sure it has some connection to some culture or ancient civilization, this gives your story a more humanistic feel to it so that it can connect better with the reader. That being said, some cultures or civilizations just don't work when writing fantasy novels. For example, don't make your story sound like a Japanese Anime cartoon (which based off of the description of your character, that's what it sounds like to me), doing so just doesn't give the readers the right impression. Also, don't write about ancient Aztec or Mayan cultures, since too few people know enough about those cultures to really appreciate the novel.  Okay, that being said, let me give you some suggestions on names you should choose. Once you have your culture/civilization chosen for your novel, look up names that were used in that civilization/culture and then look up the definition for those names. Then decide on which of those definitions best fits your character. For example, if your story is based on a Middle East culture such as Ancient Israel, then names like Natania, Benyamina or something to that affect would do. Natania means "gift from god." Benyamina means "house of God." If you choose to write about a different culture such as Ancient Greece,  then names like Penelope, Hera, Aphrodite, Artemis, or Detemer could work. If you choose Ancient Roman culture, than names like Venus or Mercury could work well.  If you choose a culture such as Ancient China, then names like Huu Shan Lee, Han Lee, or Sha Li could work. If you want to use Ancient India, then names like Shiva, Naavara, or Nirvana would work. If you would prefer Native American cultures, then names like Feather of the Wind, Girl Who Trusts the Wind, or Buffalo Girl would work. Hope that helps. Let me know if I can provide you with more assistance, I'd be happy to help you out further.
