Ok i was just wondering how old you have to be to get your jockey's license. I am 13 now and i really want to look into this. i know i might have to wait a while but i want to know some information. i want to get my "license" for a jockey and see what its like. if you could tell me everything i would need and stuff, i actualy have been practicing on my horse. i would make her start from a straight run. i hold on to her main lean up in the saddle, kick, and away she goes, lunges out into a run (but slow).

so i've been practicing (safly) and now i wan't to REALLY get into it. like i wan't to higher up my sturrups and try the jockey stance and stuff like that. so if you could give me a website about a jockey license or tell me some more pointers on how to work out to be a jockey with me and my horse i have now. (my horse i have now is an 18yo mare and layed back and shes doing very good in "our training" lol)

so plz plz plz give some webs and advice, thanks SO much!

  1. in most states you have to be 16 and weigh around 115.    You should check with your racing stewards or secretary.

  2. It is no good practising on your won horse I'm afraid as it will be nothing like riding a real racehorse!

You need to get a job helping out at a trainers yard as soon as possible and aks them to show you what to do.  You will not be able to ride professionally (and only if you are good enough) until you are a16 but you can start training now.

You will also need to go to a Racing School at 16 in order to get the full training in how to race-ride.  I do not know about the race schools in the USA but over here we have the British Racing School in Newmarket and the Northern Racing College in Doncaster.

Being a jockey is a tough life - even more so for a girl - and most peopel will never be good enough.  If you want my honest opinion, stick with school, get good grades and go to college.  Then you can get a good job that will pay you enough money to perhaps own racehorses of your own.

UPDATE - By all means give me a thumbs down, but I'm giving you an opinion - which is what this forum is all about!  I've worked in racing for a long time and I can promise you that almost every trainer I have spoken to has told me that they would rather take on an apprentice that had never even sat on a horse, so that they can teach them the right way from the beginning, rather than one that has ridden at home and learned bad habits.

If you can't handle constructive critisicm (spl) you'll never get far in the racing industry!

  3. You must be 16 years old or older.  Keep practicing with your horse.  Maybe also you could look into a summer job at a training farm and offer to work in exchange to learn to exercise race horses.  Before you can get a jockey's license you must be able to pass a riding test and be able to work a horse out of the gates in front of the track stewards.  I hope this helps.

  4. I have no idea how old you have to be but I would wait a few more years to become a jockey.   Otherwise you take the risk of getting badly hurt.

  5. go to.... frankgarzajockeyschool.com

and when you make it....you can ride for

    reyenterprises.com racing stable.....

good luck and don't give up your dream!!!!!

we have 6 horses now racing in so. califronia

so check out the website and stay in contact.
