● What are the advantages of using wax on a surfboard?

Which one do you think is better to use, surfwax or the tailpad on your surfboard...?

Surfboard Wax is exactly what it sounds like - wax for your surfboard. Ohh, no great revelations in this section then!. There are many different types of wax out there and they all do exactly the same thing - they stop you from slipping off the surfboard when you are either paddling or up surfing. At the beginning of a surf, Surf Wax is applied to the deck of the board in the positions where the feet will be placed. It can also be applied to the rails where the hands will be gripping for duck diving or popping-up. (Completely lost by surfing terminology, or just by the word terminology?, well check out the  Surfboard and the Surfing Terms pages to make the last bit vaguely readable. Perhaps I should mention that the word terminology will not appear in either section and if you really want to know what it means then ask your Dad).

Here are the 3 essential steps for applying surfboard wax to your board. Ignore them at your peril!.

Step 1 - take the plastic off.

Step 2 - rub it on your board (the wax - not the plastic bit).

Step 3 - go surfing.

Yes, it is as easy as that. Anyone who says that you need to apply the wax in a circular motion from the tail first or any other rubbish is a buffoon (and probably working elsewhere on this site). The advice we'll give is that as long as you apply plenty of wax then you should be OK. Oh - and never apply wax to the bottom of your board. Quite often it's a matter of personal choice, but most people now use wax all over, or wax for the front foot and a tail pad for the back.

Wax is cheap, easy and fast to put on and provides good traction, plus it smells nice!

Pads for the front foot are less common as more padding makes the board heavier. Pads will often cover up a lovely spray job too! And can make it harder to repair dings if you manage to go through the pad.

A tail pad often has a kicker, a raised edge at the back, which helps with power turns and boosting airs. Pads can help you make sure you're getting your feet in the right place - if my back foot is off the tailpad I know my stance is all wrong. Pads also protect the deck of the board to a certain extent.

Wax ends up getting dirty and sandy and you have to remove it periodically and start all over again, so many choose a tailpad as it's permanent. Pads do get battered about with time, but will probably last as long as the board does. If you're using a pad follow the application instructions REALLY carefully, as there's nothing worse than it peeling off.

if you have a short board, both, but if it's a long board, then use wax, they don't make tailpads(usually) for long boards. use wax all the time though unless your using a sponge top board, then you still don't need either.

The wax really helps you stay on so, i would suggest using it. Also it's really cheap.

you need a tailpad on the back(tail) of your surfboard but you need wax from where the tailpad finishes up to where ever you are going to stand. Wax is helpful if you want to stay on your surfboard because it provides you with grip. Hope this helps. Nick.
