  1. Because most names are made by a combination of two Chinese characters, theoretically, no Chinese name is really common. I would say that most people's names are quite unique. If two people's names are the same, they are either naming it after someone, or more likely, they arrived at the combination by chance, not because it's a "popular" name circulating around. There's no real common first name. All parents truly want their child's name to not only be meaningful for the child, for them, and for their family, but also, they want it to be unique. The last thing they want is for the name to be common.

As for whether or not it sounds pretty? Well, the more simple or common a character is, the less people would like it in a name. When characters for "beauty", "jade", "pearl", something to do with a flower or moon, etc. are used in a name these days, people see it as a sign of lower class/standing, because more educated people would tend to name their children with characters that hold deeper and more complex meaning. This is of course just an impression/bias, and not a true reflection of the person with the name. The way two characters complement and sound together also figures into the quality of a name, so just because one of the characters is one of those I just listed, doesn't necessarily mean the name is automatically bad. It depends on what it is paired with. More educated people can create better names because they know better what sounds good. It's kind of like a poet selecting the right words for a poem to convey both beauty and meaning.

  2. It means 'flowers' or messenger of flowers, if its a Chinese person you are talking about.

Chinese and Japanese names tend to be more about characteristics they want the child to have, like strength, good character, friendly, open, brave, etc.

This name has a significant meaning to the parents, or is a name of a honoured relative.
