  2. If you're not a dumbass.  Although he was quite full of s**t in many respects (see: numerous inconsistencies throughout Walden Pond) he was still a brilliant thinker and a brilliant writer as well as having the courage to stand up for his convictions.

    Speaking of being imprisoned:

    "The only house in a slave State in which a free man can abide with honor..."

  3. I don't know if he is widely known anymore. I really like him, myself. I remember reading his "Walden Pond" book in high school, and being very inspired.

    I haven't heard much about him, though, anywhere.
