the same team to the third spot at the conclusion of the 2010/11 campaign.
Bochum lost their opening game of the season against Fortuna Dusseldorf by a 2-0 margin while the club notched up their only win against FSV Frankfurt, the following week. Bochum played out a 0-0 draw against Hansa Rostock, losing to St. Pauli in game-week

The 57-year-old showed gratitude to Bochum officials for persisting with him throughout the last season, wishing the club best of luck for upcoming assignments. The Former FC Koln player mentioned that he never expected sacking orders from the higher officials
but has no complaints as he has been unable to deliver this time around.
While talking to the local press, one of the officials at the club stated, "We thank Friedhelm Funkel and Christoph John for the good work they have done in the past 15 months. The step is not taken lightly, especially since the relationship between the
head coach and the team is intact. By changing the coaching staff we want to start afresh. The team has a lot of quality, but it is not currently reaching its potential."

The veteran made just four appearances for the German national side, netting a solitary goal in return. He made a total of 472 league appearances playing for Bayer 05 Uerdingen and FC Kaiserslautern, bagging 149 goals during the process.
Bochum are next up against SC Paderborn on Sunday, September 18. A win there will certainly get them out of the relegation zone.
